Homosexuality and same-sex relationships are legal in Indonesia but are not generally approved at the societal level, so it is beneficial to practice discretion when it comes to public displays of affection. Avoid using your left hand to shake hands because they consider the left hand dirty. Take your shoes off before entering a temple or a house. Indonesians are warm and friendly so always remember to smile and their camaraderie can make your stay in their land worthwhile.

The traditional modes of transportation are "becaks" and "bemos." A becak looks like a bike with a rickshaw that can carry two people and a bemo is a small bus that can carry around 10 people. Trains, that still bear the influence of the Dutch on the country, are great to take in Java and Sumatra. Book your tickets to ride ferries and speedboats when travelling inter-island from Lombok to Gili Trawangan or Java to Bali. Lastly, rent a scooter or what they call a motor "bebek" and ride like the locals in different cities but don't forget to put your helmet on!

While Indonesia allows the IVF process and other treatments that address infertility issues, religious and cultural values have prevented the legality of gestational surrogacy. Assisted technology that paves the way for a successful pregnancy often conflicts with the culture and beliefs of the Indonesian population. Their religion, Sunni Islam, has ruled surrogacy as illegal. Besides religion, the fight for women's rights remains in place since gender inequity is still prevalent in society.
