Indonesia is on the move to propel its medical tourism industry in the next four years by improving medical facilities and equipment using modern digital technology. One of the medical specialities that are rising is the field of fertility services. There are now 23 IVF centres that are legally registered in Indonesia according to the Indonesian Association for In Vitro Fertilisation (IAIVF).
Depending on which clinic you would use, the host of advanced technique procedures are varied, such as the IVF process, sperm cell freezing, egg freezing or oocyte cryopreservation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), fresh or frozen embryo transfer, cryo-shipping of healthy embryo or sperm, sperm DNA fragmentation testing, physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection (PICSI), intracytoplasmic morphologically-selected sperm injection (IMSI), assisted hatching, preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic diseases (PGT-M), endometrial receptivity analysis (ERA), intrauterine insemination (IUI), Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration, MicroTESE (Microdissection Testicular Sperm Extraction), and Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) for men.
Indonesia is still in its infancy when it comes to medical tourism. In 2022, the Indonesia Medical Tourism Association (AWMI) announced that it had started to boost medical tourism with its Community Telehealth Pavilion (ATM Health) service that allows tourists to monitor their vital conditions before going on an adventure, such as mountain climbing. In the next four years, the Ministry of Health is focusing on its healthcare transformation program to improve medical facilities and equipment using modern digital technology.
Bali is the favourite tourist destination in Indonesia because of its beaches, temples, and gorgeous mountain views. Put the following on your Bali checklist: Ubud Monkey Forest; Kuta Beach; Tanah Lot; Tirta Empul Temple; and Uluwatu Temple. If you're into aquatic adventures, visit the cays, shoals, and islands of Raja Ampat in West Papua. This is a prime destination for divers who want to see corals, fish, turtles, molluscs, and other marine forms of life. Jakarta is the capital of the country and where you can explore its history touched by Dutch and British influences in Old Town Batavia, National Museum, and National Monument.
Muslims make up around 85% of the Indonesian population while the Balinese are mostly Hindus. As a sign of respect, try to avoid wearing skimpy, figure-skimming outfits in this very conservative country. Shorts and skirts should at least reach knee level. Homosexuality and same-sex relationships are legal in Indonesia but are not generally approved at the societal level, so it is beneficial to practice discretion when it comes to public displays of affection. Avoid using your left hand to shake hands because they consider the left hand dirty. Take your shoes off before entering a temple or a house. Indonesians are warm and friendly so always remember to smile and their camaraderie can make your stay in their land worthwhile.
The traditional modes of transportation are "becaks" and "bemos." A becak looks like a bike with a rickshaw that can carry two people and a bemo is a small bus that can carry around 10 people. Trains, that still bear the influence of the Dutch on the country, are great to take in Java and Sumatra. Book your tickets to ride ferries and speedboats when travelling inter-island from Lombok to Gili Trawangan or Java to Bali. Lastly, rent a scooter or what they call a motor "bebek" and ride like the locals in different cities but don't forget to put your helmet on!
While Indonesia allows the IVF process and other treatments that address infertility issues, religious and cultural values have prevented the legality of gestational surrogacy. Assisted technology that paves the way for a successful pregnancy often conflicts with the culture and beliefs of the Indonesian population. Their religion, Sunni Islam, has ruled surrogacy as illegal. Besides religion, the fight for women's rights remains in place since gender inequity is still prevalent in society.
Indonesian is the main language while other popular languages are Javanese, English, Balinese, Chinese, and Dutch.
Fertility services including IVF are regulated by the Minister of Health Regulation No. 43 of 2015 regarding Provisions of Assisted Reproductive Services or Pregnancy Outside of the Natural Way (MoH Regulation 43/2015). The license to operate is given to IVF centres upon passing the assessment and compliance standards of the Ministry of Health and Perhimpunan Fertilisasi In Vitro Indonesia (PERFITRI) representatives.
The first IVF procedure in Indonesia was conducted in 1987 by the "Father of Indonesian IVF" Sudraji Sumapraja and his team. There are many remarkable years in the history of Indonesian IVF babies:
1989: The first twin and triplet IVF babies were born.1990: The first IVF baby was born using the ZIFT technique.1991: The first quadruplet IVF babies were born.1996: The first twin IVF babies were born using the ICSI technique.
While the IVF process is still in its infancy in Indonesia, there are currently 23 IVF centres that are legally registered in Indonesia according to the Indonesian Association for In Vitro Fertilisation (IAIVF). Morula IVF Indonesia is the foremost fertility clinic today. The centre only accommodates patients who have medical reasons, such as ovarian diseases like cysts and cancer, for freezing their eggs.

"I love Zora Health for their simple, transparent pricing. It was a relief not to worry about unexpected fees or hidden costs. They made the entire process stress-free and easy to understand, which allowed my husband and I to focus on what mattered most - my family's future."
"I had a preferred doctor overseas that my girl friends recommended. He is part of Zora’s clinic network, but I was interested in Zora’s support and perks. After speaking to Zora, they assured me I wouldn’t pay extra. Zora managed the whole process - from personalised guidance to answering my queries about legalities."
"Zora’s instalment plans were a true lifesaver. I was so grateful for their flexible and affordable options. I have been thinking about preserving my eggs as a form of “insurance” but didn’t want to pay a big lump sum upfront as I am saving for a house. The instalment plan helps me manage my finances better.”
"After failing previously, we were very anxious and were not sure what to expect. They guided us through the process and cared for us every step of the way. My treatment at the clinic was long, and sometimes it was emotionally draining, but having a fertility coach made us feel better and more prepared. As busy professionals, we appreciate the convenience of scheduling appointments through Zora. I have recommended Zora to all our friends."
