The weeks and months following childbirth are often the most important and are least supported in a person’s journey as a parent. At this point, one is recovering from labour and birth, dealing with hormone changes, and learning how to care for a newborn while adjusting to one’s own new identity.
Postpartum recovery, newborn care, infant feeding, child development, and child health all matter, and none of it should feel like something you navigate alone.
That’s why at Zora Health, our compassionate and knowledgeable team is here to support you at every stage of early parenthood.
Recovery from birth is a combination of physical, hormonal, and emotional processes going on at the same time. Your body needs time to heal, your hormones are changing drastically, and your mental health deserves as much attention as your physical recovery.
Bleeding, soreness, and exhaustion are normally expected in the first couple of weeks after childbirth. Throughout this period, things such as breastfeeding, a balanced diet, sufficient hydration, and pelvic floor exercises can assist in achieving recovery. Sleep deprivation is unavoidable, but accepting help and prioritising rest when possible makes a real difference.
If you experience strong bleeding, high temperature, unbearable pain, or symptoms of post-natal depression such as persistent low mood, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, or inability to cope, seek medical assistance immediately. Remember, mental health is as important as physical recovery, and help is available.
Frequent visits to your healthcare provider are not optional; they’re essential.
8 to 12 feeds per day; breast milk or formula. Weight should return to birth weight by 2 weeks.
16 to 17 hours daily in short cycles; no established day/night pattern yet
Responds to sound, follows faces with eyes, first social smile appears around 6 weeks.
Feeds become more efficient and spaced; typically, every 3 to 4 hours. Solid foods not yet needed.
Longer night stretches begin to develop; 14 to 16 hours total with more predictable patterns.
Holds head steadily, rolls front to back, laughs, babbles, and reaches for objects.
Solid foods introduced from around 6 months alongside breast or formula milk; purees progressing to soft finger foods.
12 to 14 hours with 2 daytime naps; most babies can sleep longer stretches at night by 9 months.
Sits independently, begins crawling, says first words like “mama” and “dada”, waves, and shows stranger anxiety.
Three meals and two snacks daily; varies textures and flavours to support healthy eating habits from early on.
11 to 14 hours with one daytime nap; consistent bedtime routines support healthy sleep at this stage.
First steps, vocabulary grows to 50+ words by 24 months, plays alongside others, and begins showing empathy.
Having a regular health check-up for your baby is a caring step that helps you feel confident about their long-term health and reassures you that issues are caught early.
Regular health check-ups for children include assessing growth and development, updating vaccinations, assessing nutrition, and checking vision and hearing, as well as any other aspects of health that correspond to the child’s age. Dental care begins earlier than most parents expect; first teeth need attention from the moment they appear.
Early intervention for developmental concerns can lead to positive outcomes, helping you feel hopeful and confident in supporting your child’s growth.
Usually, the body heals from childbirth after six to eight weeks, but recovery varies; taking time and asking for help can make you feel supported and understood.
Your newborn will undergo an examination within 72 hours of being born and again at 6 to 8 weeks. The routine pediatric appointments take place during important developmental milestones, typically at the age of 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months, thus ensuring that growth, development, and vaccinations are in order.
Newborns typically need to be fed every 2 to 3 hours and, on average, between 8 and 12 times in 24 hours. Frequent feeding supports a good supply of breast milk if the baby is breastfed. Weight should return to birth weight by 2 weeks. Speak to your midwife if you are concerned about your baby’s feeding habits or weight gain.
Talk, read, sing, and play with your child every day - these interactions are key to language, cognitive, and social development. Consistent routines, responsive parenting, and a secure environment build the attachment that lays the groundwork for healthy development over the long term.
If your child shows any of the following symptoms, you should consult a doctor: a fever higher than 38°C for children under three months of age, trouble breathing, constipation, persistent vomiting, unusual rash, significant weight loss or delay in reaching important milestones. Trust your intuition – if you think something is or may be wrong, get it checked.
