Accessible & affordable fertility care in Estonia

Egg Freezing and IVF in Estonia

Fertility clinics that offer egg freezing and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in Estonia adhere to European Union standards and are licensed by the Estonian Health Board and Agency of Medicine. Some IVF clinics have no waiting lists while others require no doctor's referral in setting up appointments. One common denominator that clinics in Estonia all have is the affordable price lists for various infertility treatment procedures. Their services typically include IVF, artificial insemination with a donor, PGT, sperm and egg freezing for social or medical reasons, and counselling.

You can choose among clinics that have multilingual staff who can speak English, Estonian, Finnish, German, Russian and Turkish. The success rates of the clinics in Estonia are competitive among European standards. IVF is available to unmarried couples and single women with a maximum age of 50. Egg freezing, egg and sperm donation, embryo donation, and transfer of embryos are all permitted.

What Medical Travelers Should Know About Estonia

As a relatively young member of the European Union since 2004, Estonia is a budding medical tourism force. It is now making waves with its premier medical spas and health resorts. These spas specialise in using nutrient-dense mud, water from natural springs, berries, juniper leaves, and other ingredients sourced within the country. The smoking saunas are reportedly a fan-favourite among medical travellers. Medical practitioners are most concentrated in Tartu because most of them are graduates of the medical university there. The majority of doctors are board-certified and have received training from abroad.

Spa aficionados favour Parnu as the country's top resort. It is famous for its wooden villas, beach parks, and earth saunas. For an old wooden town feel, visit Haapsalu where you can also inhale the fresh coastal air and watch the birds. Go spa-crazy in Estonia's largest island, Saaremaa. Feel the pebbles beneath your feet as you walk on the beach and be entranced by the lingering smell of junipers in the air. You can also go hiking in the pine forests of Setomaa. This is also the place to witness ancient singing rituals by the local folks in their unique clothing and cultural traditions. Great shopping finds in Estonia include soaps made of mud, tar, sand, and minerals, mud creams and scrubbing products, mineral water from Varska, and products made of juniper.

Always observe the local laws and safety measures in Estonia. You will get jailed when you drive under the influence of alcohol. No one is exempted from wearing clothes without small reflectors. You will pay a fine of $50 to $500 if you are caught without wearing a reflector. Always drive on the right side and remember that you should ride in a car with winter tires from December to March every year.

After arriving at the Tallinn airport, you can take a train to go to Tartu, Narva, and Rakvere. Riding ferries is the way to go when island-hopping to Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Vormsi, Kihnu, Ruhnu and Aegna is on your agenda. Summer is the best time to get a caravan to go on camping sites. Taxis are easily booked through the Bolt and Uber mobile apps.

There is little information found about social attitudes towards fertility treatment in Estonia. The limited data available states that Estonia provides maternity leave, childcare subsidised by the government, and sexual education in schools. This governmental high spending on family support may influence positive responses towards fertility treatment. This move was brought about to counter the low population and high outmigration levels in the 1990s and 2000s.

The official language is Estonian. The other widely spoken languages are Russian, English, Finnish, and German.

Benefits of Doing Fertility Treatments in Estonia

The European Union Tissues and Cells Directive regulates assisted reproduction treatments to ensure compliance. The Republic of Estonia Agency of Medicines inspects, licenses, and records the success rates of fertility clinics. Many IVF clinics send their success rates to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). Several clinics in Estonia are also ISO-certified. Many patients from European countries turn to Estonia for fertility treatment abroad because of proximity. London is two hours and a half hours away while Berlin is only a couple of hours away by air travel. Affordable IVF treatment is also a major benefit.

Estonia's good healthcare system is accessible to all tax-paying citizens. Because of this, a woman enjoys the privilege of getting free IVF treatment in both public and private IVF clinics until she reaches the age limit of 41. Furthermore, Estonia's Health Insurance Fund reimburses oocyte freezing for women with an upper age limit of 35 who are about to undergo treatment that may damage fertility.

It accommodates male and female patients who have chronic hepatitis but are not HIV-positive. Other bonus features include: there are no waiting lists and a doctor’s referral is not required. Successful pregnancy rates of this clinic reached 52% for fresh embryo transfer (ET) and 39% for frozen embryo transfer (FET) when using one's own eggs. The European Union Tissues and Cells Directive and the Republic of Estonia Agency of Medicines monitor all infertility treatment procedures in Estonia. Many IVF clinics are certified by the ISO. A boon to neighbouring European countries, Estonia attracts patients from London and Berlin the most because it is merely a couple, or a little bit more, flight hours away. "The financing options lifted a huge weight off my shoulders."

"Zora’s instalment plans were a true lifesaver. I was so grateful for their flexible and affordable options. I have been thinking about preserving my eggs as a form of “insurance” but didn’t want to pay a big lump sum upfront as I am saving for a house. The instalment plan helps me manage my finances better.”

"I never felt alone in my fertility journey."

"After failing previously, we were very anxious and were not sure what to expect. They guided us through the process and cared for us every step of the way. My treatment at the clinic was long, and sometimes it was emotionally draining, but having a fertility coach made us feel better and more prepared. As busy professionals, we appreciate the convenience of scheduling appointments through Zora. I have recommended Zora to all our friends."
