Egg Freezing and IVF in Latvia

Egg freezing and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) are legal in Latvia. It is available even for non-married heterosexual couples and single women. Female same-sex couples can get IVF too but only if they are treated as single women. There is no legal age limit for having IVF so many clinics specialise in treating women who are 50 years old and below. International patients up to 50 years of age usually choose to have a sperm donor and receive artificial insemination treatment using IVF.

Many private clinics in Latvia have high success rates and no waiting lists. Doctors and staff speak English, Latvian, and Russian. Standard IVF costs EUR 2,200 – 3,600 (USD 2375 – 3,885) per cycle. Egg freezing costs EUR 2,000 – 2,600 (USD 2,160 – 2,800).

What You Need To Know First About Latvia

Latvia is a popular medical tourism destination for international patients from Germany, China, Britain, Finland, Ukraine, Sweden, Lithuania, Norway, Estonia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Russia, France, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and other countries. Of these, Sweden and Ireland account for the most number of medical tourists in Latvia. Dental, gynaecological, and urological medical services are among the most in demand.

These patients are attracted to the low costs and technological advancements in Latvian medical establishments. The cost is five to eight times lower than that in the U.S. and two to three times cheaper than in Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. Compared to costs in Western and Scandinavian countries, savings can range between 50 and 70%. Most doctors servicing medical tourists can speak English and Russian.

Medical equipment is regularly updated in many Latvian hospitals and clinics. Medical tourism is at its prime in Jurmala and Riga. Jurmala attracts many patients because of its water procedures, massages, and readjustments in health sanatoria and rehabilitation centres. Riga is the centre for medical procedures such as neurology, psychiatric neuroses, ophthalmology, and cosmetic surgery.

What To Do in Latvia During Your Medical Vacation

After your mandatory health check at the clinic, admire the architecture in Gothic cathedrals. Go bungee jumping, bobsleighing, and step inside medieval castles at Gauja National Park. Enjoy a massage while lying on a beach at Jurmala. Art enthusiasts will love the Baroque and Rococo touches in Rundale Palace and Museum. Other medieval castles can be explored in the Turaida Museum Reserve near Sigulda and the town of Cesis.

Medical tourists should observe laws and safety tips. Pickpocketing in Riga is common, especially in the Old Town, central market, and central bus and train stations. Always do credit card transactions within your view. Be discreet if you are an LGBTQ+ tourist because Latvia was against homosexuality during its Communist years. This is no longer in practice but it pays to be discreet. There are many car thieves in Latvia so be careful especially when driving a rented car. Lock the doors at all times and hide valuables after parking your car. When in trouble, call the tourism police or national police.

Public transportation options include trains, buses, minibuses, trolleybuses, and trams. You can ride them from 5 PM to a little before midnight.

The official and dominant language is Latvian. Other widely spoken languages are Russian, English, and Latgalian.

Social Attitudes Towards Fertility Treatment

Latvia used to deny preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to be practised. It has received a sanction from the European Court of Human Rights. The Court ruled that a child has the right to be born without being affected by illness genes they carry. Today, PGT is now permitted and Latvia's clinics offer the testing.

In 2021, the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights stated that Latvia's assisted reproduction laws are perceived to be better than in Lithuania and Estonia. Assisted reproduction and preimplantation genetic diagnosis are regulated by the Sexual and Reproductive Health Law and by-laws. The law prohibits using donor’s or embryonic gametes for commercial purposes and sex selection except in cases related to sexual genetic diseases.
