Accessible & affordable fertility care in Thailand

What you Need to Know First About Thailand

Thailand is a great choice for fertility treatments such as egg freezing and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Whether it’s the promise of cutting-edge medical technology, the allure of cost-effective treatments, or the stringent ethical standards, Thailand offers a comprehensive package that caters to a broad spectrum of fertility needs.

Thailand offers affordable medical services. Because of that, most expats can afford outpatient services without the need for insurance. The private healthcare system boasts of modern and well-staffed hospitals. Meanwhile, public hospitals also have trained specialists and advanced facilities, although they tend to be crowded so patients have to wait before receiving treatment.

The Land has many Tourism Opportunities

Thailand is not just a medical destination; it’s also a tourist paradise, boasting stunning beaches, historic temples, and vibrant street markets. This offers a unique opportunity to combine a fertility treatment journey with the restorative qualities of a holiday. Many people find leisure activities a welcome distraction, making the often stressful fertility treatments more bearable. Whether taking a boat trip through Phang Nga Bay, exploring the historic city of Ayutthaya, or simply enjoying the local cuisine, being able to sightsee and relax adds a layer of emotional well-being to the medical process.

When in Thailand, it’s helpful to exercise caution and respect for laws and safety rules. For example, never make jokes about the Thai Royal family. Stand attention whenever you hear the loudspeakers play the Thai national anthem. Alcohol consumption is only allowed for people aged 20 and above. Lastly, do not overstay beyond the date stated in your visa to avoid getting banned from re-entry in the future.

The City and Town Transportation is a Welcome Experience

Transportation within the cities and towns in Thailand is a unique and refreshing experience. Among Thailand’s distinct motorised vehicles, the tuk-tuk is the most famous among tourists. It is also known as a rickshaw that has three wheels, gaudy lights, loud stereos, and colourful paintwork.

A songthaew is a converted pickup truck that has two bench-like seats facing each other at the back. They usually ply the same end-to-end routes daily and are used to transport groups of people in the inner city and provinces.

Motorbike taxis are the favourite public transportation choice of locals. People ride on the back of these motorbikes for quick destinations. They’re the quickest and most affordable mode of getting to where your next stop is. Remember to wear a helmet just to be safe!

Social Attitudes Towards Fertility Treatment

Thailand is now enjoying a rise in fertility clinics offering treatments such as freezing eggs and IVF. The country is encouraging conception after experiencing a very low birth rate since 2013. According to an article published in Reuters, the population crisis is now changing the social attitudes towards fertility treatment nationwide. The Thai government is now trying to reverse the trend by encouraging its citizens to conceive more babies and supporting fertility centres in the cities and beyond.

The official language is Central Thai while Northern Thai and Isan are also widely spoken. Other languages in Thailand are English, Chinese, Burmese, and Malay.

Benefits of Doing Fertility Treatments in Thailand

The advantages of choosing small clinics over the big ones are the increased privacy and easier access to doctors. Having said that, choosing big clinics or hospital clinics would ensure a wider range of on-site instruments, equipment, and laboratories. Medical school hospitals and public hospitals offer cheaper treatments than private hospital clinics. It’s also important to check if the fertility clinic is given the Assisted Reproductive Technology licence.

Medical tourists must secure a medical visa that permits foreign patients to travel in and out of Thailand for a whole year. However, foreign patients are only allowed 90 days of stay at a time. They should submit a confirmed hospital appointment with a Thailand medical institute first to get the medical visa.

One of the most compelling reasons to consider Thailand for fertility treatments lies in cost-effectiveness. Compared to Western countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, or Australia, the cost of fertility treatments in Thailand can be significantly less—sometimes up to 50-70% lower. This cost differential does not reflect the quality of care but rather the lower operating expenses in Thailand and different healthcare pricing models. As a result, many treatments, such as IVF and egg freezing, are financially more accessible.

Besides individual treatment costs, Thailand offers comprehensive fertility packages that combine multiple aspects of the treatment journey. These all-inclusive packages often include consultations, diagnostics, medications, and even accommodation and transportation in some cases. By bundling these services, patients save on the overall cost and enjoy the convenience of a streamlined process.

This is particularly beneficial for international patients, who can face logistical challenges when navigating healthcare services abroad. These customisable packages allow you to choose the services that best fit your needs, thus providing a personalised treatment experience.

Technological Excellence and Fertility Expertise
When it comes to medical infrastructure, Thailand boasts some of the most advanced fertility and IVF clinics in the world. These state-of-the-art facilities have the latest technologies, including top-tier IVF labs. Such cutting-edge facilities elevate the standard of care, resulting in improved success rates for various fertility treatments.

Thailand’s fertility clinics are staffed by highly skilled physicians who are often educated and trained in leading medical institutions globally. Beyond the physicians, nurses and other support staff are crucial in the fertility treatment process. In Thailand, you’ll find a culture of patient-centric care, where medical staff go above and beyond to make patients feel comfortable and well-informed. Whether assisting with medication protocols or providing emotional support during the challenging phases of treatment, the supportive environment significantly enhances the overall patient experience.

Also, one of the challenges in seeking medical treatment abroad is the language barrier. However, Thai clinics often employ multilingual staff proficient in English and sometimes other languages like Mandarin, Russian, or Arabic. This multi-language capability eases communication, ensures patients fully comprehend their treatment options, and helps make informed decisions.

The success rate of IVF in Thailand, according to the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, is about 40-50%. This coincides with the global average rate for IVF. That rate could be higher at around 60-70% for women below 35 years old who opt for a single embryo transfer.

There is a study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Reproduction that found a higher IVF success rate for those who used donor eggs or sperm in Thailand. Couples who used donor eggs had a high clinical pregnancy rate of 53.8% and 44.4% live birth rate while those who used their own eggs had a 34.1% clinical pregnancy rate and 21.5% live birth rate.

Meanwhile, those who used donor sperm enjoyed a clinical pregnancy rate of 43.3% and 34.5% live birth rate while couples who used their own sperm had a 36.3% clinical pregnancy rate and 28.5% live birth rate.

IVF and Egg Freezing Costs to Consider

According to an article in Forbes Health, a couple in the U.S. can be expected to be charged around $15,000 to $20,000 for one IVF cycle. That includes the base fee and additional costs. An IVF cycle costs much less in a typical Thailand IVF clinic, averaging 150,000 to 200,000 baht, which is equivalent to around $4,800 to $6,400.

An article in The New York Times states that egg freezing costs around $4,500 to $8,000 for a single cycle. According to a South Morning China Post article, egg freezing would cost around $3,000 in Thailand, and that would depend on the number of eggs and how long the eggs would be stored.

Other Considerations Before Starting Your Fertility Treatment in Thailand

In an average Thailand IVF clinic, only legally married, heterosexual couples are eligible for fertility treatments. Couples must produce a marriage certificate and a signed consent letter from both parties.

The good news is that everyone is eligible for elective egg freezing in Thailand. Single women, as well as married couples, can have their eggs frozen legally. The patient must sign a consent letter and undergo a health screening for contagious diseases. This allows infected and non-infected eggs to be separated, preventing contamination.

The export and import of eggs and embryos are not allowed.

Why Choose Thailand for Your Fertility Treatment

From cost-effectiveness and cutting-edge technology to highly skilled medical professionals, Thailand is a compelling choice for fertility treatment patients worldwide. Additionally, the cultural richness and tourism opportunities offer a holistic approach to medical care, making the experience as seamless as possible. Whether you’re on the cusp of deciding or still weighing your options, Thailand offers a valuable proposition that should not be overlooked.

"The financing options lifted a huge weight off my shoulders."

"Zora’s instalment plans were a true lifesaver. I was so grateful for their flexible and affordable options. I have been thinking about preserving my eggs as a form of “insurance” but didn’t want to pay a big lump sum upfront as I am saving for a house. The instalment plan helps me manage my finances better.”

"I never felt alone in my fertility journey."

"After failing previously, we were very anxious and were not sure what to expect. They guided us through the process and cared for us every step of the way. My treatment at the clinic was long, and sometimes it was emotionally draining, but having a fertility coach made us feel better and more prepared. As busy professionals, we appreciate the convenience of scheduling appointments through Zora. I have recommended Zora to all our friends."
